Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. It's not as hard as it seems.
- Capture rain water to water your plants.
- Use low-flow sink and shower heads.
- Set the thermostat at 78 degrees in the summer and
65 degrees in the winter. - Know your local salvage yards and antique shops.
Take advantage of them when possible. - Don’t always buy new; someone’s trash may be your
treasure, and vice-versa. - Donate old magazines to your doctor, dentist, veterinarian
or real estate agent for their lobbies. - Recycle all your old carpet.
- Buy or rent a house or office that is already built and/or located
in a green-certified building. - Create spaces that have views to the outside. Take advantage of daylight.
Add a skylight if necessary. - Use rapidly renewable materials like bamboo, strawboard,
linoleum and wool carpet. - Reuse and reupholster furniture.
- Use Energy Star-rated appliances.
- Install ceiling fans to improve circulation of heat and cool air.
- Use radiant heat.
- Use low or zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints.
- Use live indoor plants.
- Buy locally grown or organic flowers for the home or office.
- Know, visit and support your local artists.
- Create green standards for each of your projects.
- Teach your children about what you are doing to make your home greener.
